2019  |  UX & UI Direction  |  AT&T  |  Android AOSP

SUMMARY

The DIRECTV Residential Experience (DRE) covers a hotel from the front desk to the room and complicated to update. Hoteliers are seeking a simpler scalable and modular solution.

Chief Accomplishments:

  • Adapted an existing framework to accommodate the unique deployment
  • Created a full working prototype to promote the product at a major trade show.
  • Introduced a new area of revenue for the AT&T entertainment business.

STRATEGY

Started by using a strategic ‘point of view’ I had previously created around what entertainment and travel, from the pre-planning phases all the way through to reliving the experience and the many emotions in between.

RESEARCH

We planed out the objectives of a study on guest behaviors and expectations, results of our Unstructured Interview were as follows:

  • Guests would like to use their own app accounts.
  • Guests want the at-home TV experience, especially the Guide.
  • Engaged viewing patterns for hotels may differ from those at home.
  • Guests would like a more engaging hotel TV experience.
  • Guests spend on average 2-3 hours engaged with TV.
  • Ability to check the weather is important

IDEATION

The framework of the system would be split in two parts,  a customizable App Launcher home screen that could host other hotel room apps, and a live TV App experience that would include a guide and video player.

DESIGN

APP LAUNCHER

LIVE TV APP

Design work for the Live TV App was split between incorporating as many existing parts from the core design and adaptation work to fit the specific use case.

THE DEMO

The Product team were hoping to have something to show prospective clients at HITEC, worlds largest hospitality technology show. We created a prototype using Principle that simulated the look and feel of a finished product without derailing the development team.

TESTING

Even with challenging deadlines, we wanted to ensure that the product passed through our internal testing with the research team. The prototype was rebuilt based on the test script. We recruited a group of participants based on familiarity with hotel TVs.

The finding were resoundingly positive and included the following insights:

  • Participants generally loved the interface
  • The apps and interaction were noticeable and useful
  • Time and weather display was valued
  • Immediate need for the guide to see content offerings
